Wayne - I think your skills have officially outgrown your camera. The cropped photos are getting smaller, because the pixel resolution is fixed. As you crop the photo smaller and smaller, there comes a point where it does not show up as the full size image any more. Picasa displays the image size in an information bar, just below the photo. If you look at this, you will see two numbers, which represent the size of the image in pixels. I am using a 10 Megapixel camera, so the starting images are 3456 pixels wide by 2304 pixels high. That gives me a lot of room to crop a photo down to the typical 640 pixels wide that is commonly used on web forums. I think your image is shrinking because the width is now less than 640 pixels wide.

You may want to check your camera settings to make sure it is set at the highest resolution and finest detail settings. If it is already at the maximum settings, your are at the limit of what the camera can do.

Yep, thats some good news and bad news! Looks like I need a an upgrade the Christmas! ;)
