Spent Caddis (warning: Winged)

This morning I was watching a video by A.K. Best. A tyer from here in Colorado. He was demonstarting the Spent Caddis. His version of the fly is a dry. Dead bug, but still floating in the film.

I am of the opinion that a Soft Hackle version will work better. Being as I fish dry flies as a last resort, I had to convert this fly to a wet. I hope I get a chance to try it out soon.
I have noticed the Caddis adults that have been eaten by fish are much darker than A.K.'s version so I used darker materials.

Hook - Mustad 9671, size 14
Thread - UTC70, Brown
Abdomen - Light Gray Sow Scud Dubbing. Dubbed fat in the rear, tapering thin at the front.
Wing - Mallard dyed Wood Duck
Thorax/Collar - Grizzly Hen Hackle with one side stripped off. Wrapped 5 times.

Ofcourse, these are only my opinions on the spent caddis. ;)

Looks pretty convincing to me.
I hope you get to try it out soon.

Outstanding! I have full confidence this is going to work like a charm. I'm already looking forward to the photo log proving it's success.

That is a really neat drowned Caddis pattern. I was thinking of something along the same lines but with an open bent deer hair wing hoping it would sit in or just below the film, but this one looks work copying. :D

Wayne, this is fantastic. I'd fish that with a lot of confidence. It would be interesting to use a hackle rather than the wing. A dyed partridge feather, just one turn that would approximate the length of this wing, tied behind the main hackle. It may not be any more effective and wouldn't matter with such a nicely formed body and lively hackle, but the thought occurred to me and I just thought it would be interesting to see. This my friend, is really nice to see. Great pattern. I'm looking forward to a report.
