Fun with Yarn

Seeing all the lovely flies made with yarn bodies, I decided to break out the vise and try my hand at it. After several miserable failures, I ended up with the following two that I am content with.

Butterscotch - pretty pleased how this one came out, but I need to work on tying off the head.

Body: UTC WeeWool Yarn in Tan
Rib: Copper wire
Hackle: Brown Hen cape


Dark Hot Head - This was made with heavier Lion brand yarn (thanks Ray)

The move from Cincinnati to Colorado was trying at best. I can heartily recommend that if you are ever given the opportunity of driving across Kansas, politely decline :-). We are finally settled in and the list of honey-dos is to a point where I can take a bit of time to get out on the rivers and back to the vise.

darin, I have had a great time fooling around with the wool flies and these have a meaty profile with texture and some action...I can't imagine they wouldn't work out for you. Beautifully done. Thanks for sharing.

The brown Lion brand has a nice rich mix of tones that are very apparent when submerged. This brown and the other Lion - Oatmeal (the names/numbers escape me at the moment) are some of my favorites. Let me see if I can find the resource images just for fun.

I would post the pics but I don't know what's going on. I'm on a borrowed machine and cant get any of the interfaces to appear or cooperate. It's worth the click as there are a number of yarns to review.

Very cool looking flies, they should pass muster with most of our fishy friends. :D
The Lion yarn looks like it is multi-ply? If so you can separate the ply to give smaller strands and build a finer body, but the one you show is a nice chunky caddis kind of profile- I like them both.

I love yarn on a fly. Your flies look good. I have no doubt the fish will be giving their approval as well. Keep up the good work!
