I was pleased with my results on the collar, but I am disappointed in the head of my patterns."
Wayne - You may want to add a simple peacock herl wrap in front of the hackle. This would hide the thread wraps and add a bit more bugginess to the front of the fly. Another approach would be to tye in the bundle of hackle fibers first (facing out over the eye of the hook). Once the body if finished, fold them back and make a couple wraps over the base of the fibers to hold them in place.
I have needed magnification for over a year now, and once I got over the initial "oh crap factor", I can honestly say that magnification has really helped my tying. You may be able to just use simple pair of magnifying reading glasses (the ones they sell at the local pharmacy or Walmart). I've graduated to the industrial strength headband/visor models. They look goofy, but then again, so do I.

I am still toying with Charlie Cravens technique for over size feathers. While a rather Plain Jane pattern, I am getting better at making a neat head with the oversize feather. One thing I have noticed. There is less bulk to cover up if I remove the stem of the feather. Pretty sure that was in the video.
Hook- Mustad 3906 size 12
Thread- Griffiths 14/0 Gray
Tail - Gambels Quail
Body - Muskrat
Collar - Over size Gambels Quail feather from the shoulder of a wing

Wow! What an effective looking pattern. I love the proportions you used (tail length & hackle length). Beautiful.

The second round of purple ones, with mallard are really nice. That last fly was very sweet too!

This is a great looking fly, and excellent execution of that technique. I need to spend some time working on that. There are so many feathers on these skins that don't use, but should. Thanks for the primer.
