Wayne, I'm not sure which hook you're using for this up-eye pattern, but if it is one of the older (vintage) hooks, the barbs can be brittle when you try to crimp them. They break leaving a jagged lump, or snapping the point. It's recommended on old hooks to heat them a bit before crimping. If it's a newly manufactured hook, the large barb will only have the typical effects of hindering some hook-ups if not crimped.
