Re: Green Caddis Larva 1270
Thanks everyone. I'm excited about the prospects of this pattern. I know how effecting the tubing patterns can be, although I've shyed away from them for years. Most synthetics for that matter. And as much pleasure as I find in blending natural furs on varying hooks to approximate general species, I can appreciate all the potential of synthetic materials as well. I think there is a whole series to be tied and tuned with this one. I wish I could spend more time pursuing any of these series. My time will come.
I'll try to get a pic of some of my first soft-hackles which used the v-rib and took a couple of important browns for me early this season.
Here's one that I posted in a strange place earlier, but uses the exact same rib material as the green caddis. I brought the black thread down the shank in large spirals securing the ribbing along the shank and then brought the thread up in very large spirals back up toward the eye. i was surprised to see how much hook and thread definition showed beneath the tubing. It's not as cool as the wire in tube technique, but I like the glimmer and contrast under the tubing. Another untested pattern.

Thanks again.

Re: Green Caddis Larva 1270
Here are a couple of unsolicted patterns from my first few sets of soft-hackles, or any flies in general. The orange pattern took a couple of wild browns in some small water in central PA earlier this season. I never know when a hunch is based on some depth of experience or if it's just a whim. Probably both. I can't deny the effectiveness of the ribbing material on these bodies. It just lacks the natural connection that flies tied with natural materials seem to possess, as one of my perferences. But there is room for everyone, almost. Check out the heads on these guys.
I'm a slower learner than some. Although, the fish may very well prefer them.

William, I am still using solid rib material for my larger Caddis Pupa and Stone nymph patterns. While I am hooked on using the tubing with a wire or Krystal Flash core, the solid materials work best for me on larger sized flys (size 12-6).
Hook- Dai-Riki 135 size 10
Thread- Uni, 8/0 Camel
Abdomen - 50% Natural-50% Light Chocolate Hares Ear
Rib - Medium, Olive D-Rib
Thorax - Tan Ostritch Herl
Collar - Brown Hen Saddle

This style of caddis pupa was very good to me last year during runoff. The biggest difference between this pattern and the ones I have used in previous years is the underbody of the thorax. In previous years I didn't use an underbody, just V-Rib, and D-Rib.
As always, your patterns look perfect sir.

I pulled my flies out of my fly box for these pics. Had I known, I would have made them prettyer

These are the first Flymphs that I have ever incorporated Green Wing Teal. I was never able to use oversize feathers until recently.

A different shot. The heads are not neat and trim, but maybe the trout wont mind if the water is a tad stained.

Off to see the Dr. for my over 50 physical.

Absolutely everything Ray and William and Mark said plus more. Simply wonderful.
