Hate when my buddie breaks out his Loop Yellow rod. That thing can be seen from 200 meters away. It's usually bent with a trout, and that just irritates me!

I am enjoying my Loop Nymph rod...good tools.

Boris - Thanks for the explanation of the leader set-ups. I recently bought my first furled leader set-up, which I plan to try out this spring. I have never used a furled leader, so it will be a new learning experience for me. All part of the fun.

I am not familiar with the "Stroft leader" you mentioned, but will look into it. Thanks for the additional photo and fly recipe.

Boris,
This post is interesting on so many levels. That stream looks like heaven, especially knowing what you found swimming in it.
I am unable to fully understand the leader techniques, but I'm hoping to get a better grasp of the matter this summer.

Wonderful photography.

Is this the Stoft leader material you mentioned earlier? Do you use this material to create custom tapered leaders, or do they also sell full knotless tapered leaders?

This post just keeps getting better.

This may be of interest. Stefan sent a few more flies my way and allowed me to photograph them. They are a beautiful set, but the one that struck me first was the first one I wanted to tie onto a tippet. This CdC version looks like it would kill as an emerger or beetle. I will definitely add a couple of these and the Boris CdC Emerger for trials this season.

Nice fly, Stefan. Please comment if you see this.

That is the stuff Ray, like most things German- it can be expensive, but it is good stuff. Boris will confirm when he see's this.
It is popular salt water line over here, more so than leader tippet material for fly fishing. The more flamboyant threadliners like the stuff as well.
Me I like the other German offering good old cheap Maxima. ;)
Like most things, there is probably a better selection available in Australia than what there is here.

Jeff - I got into tying my own leaders for a few seasons. I have a nice selection of the Maxima spools. I was happy fishing custom leaders, but found them annoying when there was lots of debris on the surface of the water (spring/fall). The knots tended to pick up the debris and I had to periodically clean off the leader. This seems like less of an issue with the knotless leaders.

It is fun, however, playing around with different leader formulas. In my experience, the leader design can make a lot of difference in the effectiveness of a cast.

Stefan - Thanks for sharing more of your creations with us, via William. Does this fly have a back-story, like the other patterns you have shared with us?

Leader formula can be a debate and a half- perhaps better started as a new thread......
But yes, I agree- knots can be a beast for the reasons you describe and can also catch when you over power casting stroke or do not allow the backcast to extend fully and throw tailing loops- like when it is blowing! Leads to some fun tangles.
I like both, but have found it is better sometimes when extending a leader length to add line to the stiffer end rather than extend the tippet by a few feet, helps with turn over and energy transfer.

I also made myself a furling jig.......... but again, that is another story. Back to the CDC emerger.

Boris, mate if the best laid plans come to fruition, I imagine some time in mid May you may get to see some spare wild Mallard CDC again. :D

Yeah, that's the stuff Ray. But the also do a tapered leader which is what I'm going to try with their tippet also. My only criticism with furled leaders is they can get twisted on sudden release after being stretched. This is how it goes, hook a fish and put lots of pressure on it then the hook pulls and the leader snaps back with evil twists that take you twenty minutes to unwind. Well not always but often.

Jeff, you might be surprised that a homegrown NZ crowd called Swift is the NZ and Australian agent. Swift is associated with "On the Fly Productions" who made the film "Once in a Blue Moon" about the fabled NZ mouse year and the video called "Casts that Catch Fish". Great videos. You might also be interested in their glass rods too. http://swiftflyfishing.com/ (I have no interest in this company - emotional or financial)

Here's the Stroft link on Swift. http://swiftflyfishing.com/collections/ ... aders-12ft

Nice fly Stefan, thanks for posting that Will.

Thanks Lance.

Boris - Thanks for the link. I was looking at the leader material, but got distracted by the casting videos. These look very useful.
