Re: 1-21-12 experimentation March Brown
Thanks for the thoughts. I will try to run hen through the thorax, but that is not something I've done before. I will see what it looks like. I don't run the wire all the way to the head. I stop it at the end of the thorax, before the pine squirrel. Thanks Vicki, I have just about nailed it as far as what I wanted, but...I am not quite satisfied with the right color of collar yet.

i like the one with the dark hackle. They look all very well tied to me.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am about to load my computer with the latest two. One is my favorite hackle, and I am going to go with it. I am going to show pics of 2 hens I prefer for this fly. I do not know the names of them. They were given to me. Give me a few minutes, and then I should have them on my Photobucket, and I will post it asap.
Re: 1-21-12 experimentation March Brown

This is the 2nd favorite hen feather. Below this I will put the hackle that goes with it. I do not know the names of the hen hackle, but if you know, please inform me.
I love it, and when I get low, I will buy more.

The hackle below this line, is the favorite hackle for this fly.

This is the hackle I decided on. Remember Jim Croce...Bad, Bad Leroy Brown? I decided to name the fly Leroy Brown. I was thinking March Brown...how many
patterns have March Brown in the name...too many. I got brown, and thought, it is bad looking...then that old song came to my mind.

These last two photos are different views of the same fly. Any of the hackles I used will work. But my favorite two are listed with the pics of the hens.
Oh, of the last two photos, could you tell me which pic you like the best? I am going to put the name on that pic later today. Thanks.

Kelly L. Howdy;
Of the 2 bottom pix, I'm gonna say the top one.
appears sharper foucs, colors are crisper.
my 2 pennies worth, such as it may be....

Thanks Hank! I appreciate it. Yes, it is a little sharper. Although I like the look of the profile in the second one. This is the exact same fly as the others I've done recently. The squirrel hair is hiding the HareTron, but it is still there. Thank you very much for your opinion!

Re: 1-21-12 experimentation March Brown
So nobody knows the two hens I posted pics of?
Re: 1-21-12 experimentation March Brown
The first feather photo is probably India Hen Back. The second one I believe is Whiting American Hen Cape - Black Laced White dyed Brown. I saw one last night. It was a little expensive. My photo matches the photo of the Whiting hen, so I am confident that is what that feather was. I am happy to finally have this resolved. Now when I run low, I will know what to order.

Great flies Kelly, your photography isn't too bad either. I like the idea of using Pearsall's
Orange for the body. Here is a fly I tied a few years ago using an orange body, but I used cinamon
coloured Spanflex, doubled and twisted for the rib. The original idea for the silk body, I got
from one of W. H. Lawrie's nymph patterns, circa 1939. The well-waxed orange goes a nice
mahogany colour.
I've got to get those Hot spot Spiders finished, and then try some March Brown ideas I have.
