Kelly L. Howdy;

Think ya nailed it that time!!! 8-) .

As Jeff mentioned they all look great.
Reckon with each of these you'll have something
to replicate near any bug you'll trip over there in TEXAS

Thank you Hank. We do have an abundance of bugs. I I just heard the Crazy Ant is coming our way, from South Texas. I don't know where it originated from. I guess they don't mind the heat. I just may tie my spider box in this look, with both colors. But for the bass, I am gonna try the longer shanked version as well. I have a few already in my competition box. (I'm in no competitions, but the box holds a ton of flies...great for the fly tyer) I will have a few in my box to the Blue River too. I know fish really like peacock herl on a fly. Who knows this might bring me the big one...lol.

Hank, for the longer shank, 3 fibers at once. For the standard size shank, 2 fibers.

Alright, this is the last photograph. This is as close to the original as I could get. It still has the tag, and copper wire though. This hackle is not the easiest to work with. Anyway, of the flies I've done so far, in this color, I liked this one the best.

This one has (what I consider anyhow) a great plump beetle body shape. Nice fly, don't know if it is any nicer than the other examples you have shown, but very nice.

Hackle not easy to work with- as in not easy to wrap? Had you thought of tearing off some barbs and tying them as a rolled hackle over the hook eye- build the body and then push the hackle fibres back to an upright position before forming the head?
That way you may be able to govern the length of the fibres and they may be more prone to sit at more of a right angle than back along the body. Just a thought- not an instruction. :D

Thanks Hank.
Jeff, that idea is wonderful!! I don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier. (That is not a method I've used, but will have to do it now) This type of feather is basically the same size. Yes, I would like to shorten the feather a bit. I have to learn to roll the hackle like you mentioned anyway. I plan to do some Irish Dabblers very soon. (that is how they do the Bronze Mallard) This feather can turn on you, and it seems to have a mind of it's own. I have tried using fibers from just one side, but it doesn't look as good to me. Your idea is a great one. I will try it out as soon as I can get to tie again, hopefully later on this evening, or maybe sooner.
