Thought I'd try a gold rib on a short shank version.

Waterhen Bloa (Variant)

Well OK - extremely distant cousin!

I was tying up some Waterhen Bloa and thought I'd have a go at tying one that might catch for me. I have had no luck whatsoever with the straight Waterhen Bloa - though I am aware there could be an element of the self fulfilling prophecy here - it doesn't find its way onto my cast very often as I have no luck with it... ;)

This is Pearsall's primrose, well waxed and lightly dubbed with water rat substitute. Tied Clyde style I believe? With the silk spiralled back and a fine copper rib wound in between the turns of silk. Thorax: dyed argentinian hare, a blend of lighter and darker olive, twisted into split thread. Hackle: coot undercovert.

This on a kamasan #14

what more could you ask for...those really are the reason we tie spiders. Nicely done.

Thanks! :)

Hardly scientific this, but fished the P&O today, the ribbed version, and I was catching with it. Which is more than usually happens when I have fished the partridge and orange on my river before! I fished it on a single dropper with a Greenwell's spider on the point - and the P&O was catching, despite there being an olive hatch on, which is when i would have thought the Greenwell's would do the business. Go figure, as they say....

But, the evidence is mounting for me that the addition of a shiny bit of metal on the body of the fly improves its catching potential. And it is suggestive of segmentation, and as Roy is keen to point out, spotting segmentation is largely how trout make their living.

Again, hardly scientific - but endlessly fascinating, nonetheless! :D
