Bad Joke (:

Desperate conditions ask for desperate methods/flies... :)

Well, strong rain made freestone stream very murky and muddy. Hence, I turned my attention to bank, put this silly spider on tippet...

Image

...and pattern goes like this:

hook ..... #8 (straight eye, short shank)
rib ....... copper wire 0.20mm
body ..... white body thread
hackle ... hen, dyed pink (as a matter of fact, feather is plucked from duster)

It's a spider, right?

I will not be angry if somebody delete this topic (or have me banned :)).

I've seen stranger, and just because it's an attractor...doesn't disqualify the bug from this audience. Garish, yes. But it has all the hallmarks of a really nicely, appropriately tied spider. Especially if you consider the movement and silhouette of the fly. And it worked. The only issue for me is...a #8? I know there are several guys here who has shown flies on large hooks, and sometimes they may be the ticket, I just haven't ventured into that size...yet.

Great shot. Now hook a big one and you can brag about it. :D

Marvelous photos! I can't think of a better way to display that fly. Beautiful.

Thats adapting to conditions ;) .
Most ppl would have turned back home or fished for half an hour in such conditions.
All you did whas the right thing,a bigger spider with collors that even were visible at night.
And it worked.

I reckon you'll clean up with that one, mate... ;)

(proving you don't have the monopoly on bad jokes :D )

ps - do you have grayling where you are? Smaller hook, it looks like it might just do the business!

I did not fish for grayling, yet. Last weekend, friend of my friend (first time flyfishing, ever...) manage to hook one grayling on Bad Joke (: ...and it was on size #8! So, if he send me a photo, I've promised to send him a dosen. In case fish (grayling) gone selective, I tied some on #12. :)
