Sock Yarn
Sock Yarn
Hook - Daiichi Model 1710 (Size 12)
Thread - Pearsall's Gossamer Silk (Gold 6A)
Hackle - California Quail Back Hackle (Dark Dun)
Tag - Two Ply Sock Yarn (Bright Green)
Body - Hares Ear Dubbing (Black)
I was just playing around with some new sock yarn I received from Nick Pionessa (Oak Orchard Fly Shop). He found a bunch of small spools of sock yarn at some small craft shop. He gave me some to play with (thanks Nick). The yarn is very fine diameter and makes lovely tags on steelhead flies. I used both strands (two-ply yarn) on this pattern, but you could always split it down to a single ply for even smaller flies. I just wish I knew where he had bought this stuff, so I could get some more.
This is also the first time I am tying with California Quail. I bought a skin from Anglers Den a couple years ago and just got around to tying with it. The hackle has is a dark dun color, with fine fibers. Nice feathers to work with.

Re: Sock Yarn
Hank - Unfortunately that is a choice you'll have to make. One of lifes little compromises. I look at it as a win-win-win-win. I don't have to learn to darn socks; the time can be spent tying flies; I get ventilated socks (bonus); and I get flies to fish with. It is all about setting your priorities...

Looks warm and toasty.

I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.
