Greenwells, a few from the family

I have to admit been fascinated by this family of flies, probably because mayflies are a major food source for trout on my local river. What really fascinates me is the many styles in which it has been tied to be fished in different ways.

These are only a small number of them.

Simple spider - reasonably sparse - Dark Furnace or greenwells hackle depending on what you are imitating.

Simple spider - slighty heavier dressed hackle

Stewart Style

Mike Connors - softwing

Wing: A few Fibres from Waterwing under or over covert
Thorax: A small ball of hares ear & body guards , stroked downwards with velcro

Mike Connors - softwing, emerger version my twist to linger longer in meniscus as an emerger.

Wing: A few Fibres from Waterwing under or over covert
Thorax: A large ball of hares ear & body guards, stroked downwards with velcro

Mike Connors - softwing with split wing on websters style, though using soft coverts from waterhen.

Wing: A few Fibres from Waterwing under or over covert
Thorax: A ball of hares ear & body guards, stroked downwards with velcro

Allthough I refrain from showing it here a small number of CDC dry versions will account for a majority of trout i catch each season on dries.

Great job Otter! I've done a lot of rolled wing flies but I haven't tried the soft wings.

:) The last one above is actually a rolled undercovert fibre split wing - it looks a bit of a dogs mess in the picture, not quite so bad in reality. Haven't fished it yet , that will be a 4 or 5 months away.

Beautiful done. Did you wax your thread and what kind of wax you use??

Yes Waxed some lightly, some heavily. The wax I use was given to me by Tango on Uk Flydressing, beeswax & roisin & castor oil, the precise combination I do not know.

This is exellent!

Question about Mike Connors softwing:
why are wings perpendicular on hook? Is that something to do with movement of fly under water... or with looks... or it is somethong else?

Just lovely patterns Otter. Greenwells is great pattern to play with all types of combinations in construction.

Greenwells and it's many variations are a favorite in my fly box. So simple, clean and deadly. How can one not appreciate a fly like that. Well done Otter.
