Gold Hare and Hen

Post by William Anderson » Fri Mar 18, 2011 8:18 am

Another little wet-wire softy attractor for prospecting. And to be honest, I consider myself more of an entomology guy. I just can't stop tying these wire bodies this spring.

Superb craftsmanship.

William - The double rib is brilliant! Have you done any variations with two different colors of wire? I think a dark/light combination would look attractive as well.

Superbly tyed, by the way. It would be impossible to hide any defects with such crisp photography. You set the bar VERY high.

Thanks everyone.

Ray, I have played with that, but not with the double rib. It's a great idea. Get me going and I'll be tying wire bodies til May. :D

Ah yes, the famous Pantera martinus hatch...puts the Green Drakes on Penns Creek to shame... :)

Seriously, though: that's a great pattern. There's a version on Hans' site that I tie that continues the wire through the thorax to capture the hackle coming back toward the hookpoint, Hidy style. (Also looks great with a tinsel underbody and a wire rib. :) )

CB, will you post a link? I'd like to ask you about your technique.

William,
I think I just discovered the solution to those early season big bluegills that tend to hang out on the points in kinda deep water waiting for the water temp. to bump up a couple of degrees.
These fish are usually active and fairly hungry and your pattern has just solved a problem for me getting the fly to their level (10-15 feet). I really like the look of the fly and the double wire wraps are cool! The color combo. on this one is just right too. Thanks for sharing.

For the last couple years I have been tying & using flymphs & soft hackles with different color wire bodies with fur dubbing thoraxes
They work! Good early spring flies!
