Hank, that is it exactly. If the fibers are long enough and strong enough like turkey tail fibers or long goose herls, you can just do it with your fingers rather than the hackle pliers, so you can use a softer touch. Sometimes the uneven tension of hackle pliers pulls some fibers harder than others and you'll have some break. No biggie, because they are bound together, but I like it better if they all end up at the same place at the same time. Either way, use a soft touch. This is often done with fine wire and wrapped forward, rather than using a rib wrapped up the body once the herl is wrapped forward. Its a great technique, especially with gossamer silk because you add the color and dimension of the silk in with the herl fibers. With wire too, you can sometimes see glints of the wire in the body. Other times you can use a really fine tying thread like a 12/0 or 14/0 the same color as the herl material and it disappears, but keeps everything bound together. Just depends on the overall look of the body you are trying to get and how durable you require your flies to be.
Or the simpler answer to your question. Yes.
