I was looking through a book of wet fly patterns today and ran across one called "Claret Bumble" that caught my eye. I wanted to tie one, but I don't have all the materials that the recipe called for, such as a mix of medium claret and black cock feathers for the body hackle. I also don't have any of the claret seal fur that is supposed to serve as the body, but I did a little subbing and voila -- a "crossover" bumble for your consideration ...

Crossover Claret Bumble

Hook: Daiichi 1550, #12
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer, claret
Tail: Golden phesant crest
Rib: Fine gold oval tinsel
Body hackle: Claret hen feather with black markings
Body: Mix of brown and red seal fur in dubbing loop
Shoulder hackle: Barred blue jay

I'm doing up tying a bunch of lake patterns for an up coming competition (ehem... boobies), and you've reminded me that I have to tye a few "real" flies like this one.

I keep seeing such excellence in the flys presented upon these pages...

I have road rash on my chin as everytime I do get my mouth closed from seeing one fly I wander across another...
duuuh, (sound of jaw dropping), sccctth, sccctthh ... scraping noise as I wander around, cilck, snap, wiggle, wiggle jaw back in place again...

Ok, what's my point. This is my point, With ALL the excellance of the flys tyed here and elswhere why are there any fish left to catch at all?

Bill, I wish I knew more about these flies. I really dont have an idea of how they are fished in the UK. These seems to fall in line with the other bumbles that I've seen and it's beautifully tied of course.

They are primarily lake flies. Grease-em to float or fish them damp in the surface or sunk and various retrieves. Add a bead head to fish deep Or use them for an early season cold water fly, panfish & bass like them also.

The bumbles have been a very popular series of Irish Wetflies primarily fished in lakes in front on a drifting boat - they can be dressed heavy as above size 8/10 where they are pulled through the waves and are very attractive to salmon and sea trout. Many tie them a little sparser when chasing browns. you kinda need to adapt your tying to your style of fishing. Whilst they have spawned a host of variants the Claret and Golden Olive Versions remain the best, what colour constitues Golden Olive remains a question that can lead to a brawl after a few pints.

General tying instuctions are

Tie in Tail and Wire Rib.
Dub body
Tie in the two hackles by thick ends back from eye
Wrap the hackles together spiralling down the body
Catch in end of hackles with wire and wrap the wire back through hackles, cut off wire and excess hackle
Tie in blue jay and do one or two wraps and finish off.

Somehow I missed this particular pattern and I wish that I would have found it sooner! What an amazing pattern! It's bound to be a smash on your beloved Gunpowder Falls River. Your talents never fail to impress us! This crossover is a hit for sure!
