Well it's my first shot at a tenkara fly and I think I tied the hackle in wrong but here goes.



Hook - #14 Togen emerger
Thread - Olive YLI silk
Hackle - underwing feather from ringneck pheasant
Body - pheasant tail
Rib - olive YLI silk

Very alluring fly Vicki. I think the hackle looks great.

I hope it to be al-luring some fish! This fly owes itself, at least in part, to you Ray. You may remember recommending I tie some flies with the same silk I wrapped my rod in?

It's funny you should say that, as I was looking at this fly, I was thinking it would be a perfect way to test our your new bamboo rod. The silk provides an extra special link between the two (the rod on one end and the fly on the other). Harmony...

all you need now is some rythum and a melody..........and you good to go.

next time use up that shank..........the hackle looks great.............but it kinna looks like it's commin' out the ass of the fly. If ya know what i mean...........you did good but i know your talent level.........try to get a bit of a seperation between your abdomen and thorax.........distinction is probably a better word than seperation..........it's a nice fly and WILL catch fish............but you know that. For a first though, it's a damn good tye. Love that hackle.......

Do you mean the front end of the shank up by the eye? I tried looking some of the flies up on the net and they seemed to be tied back from the eye. I need to do some more checking. I was kinda going for an emerging BWO look and musta missed the mark.

Nah, everythings cool...............not to worry one bit..............i just personally like to see a fly that has a bit of a disticntion between the abdomen and the thorax..............what the hel do i know bout Tenkara flies per say? Not a whole lot.......i've watched the mater tye them.........but all he ever uses is thread for a body..........extremely simple.............guy prolly wouldn't know dubbing if a chunk fell on his head............
all i was sayin' is it seems a waste to have all that bare hook there doin' nothin' but potentially spookin' the fish with it's shine.....more or less your tyin' is teriffic in the way you did the wing or collar or whatever they call the hackle portion of a Tenkara fly recipe.......
to me it just looked as if only half the hook was bein' use is all..........

Now that you mention it.....Tenkara flies always do have the hackle sorta far back.......but that space behind the eye is usually covered with thread..............

It is covered with thread. Not having any instructions I just laid down a thread base then worked back and attached the hackle. I wasn't sure if there was an accepted distance to place the hackle or if it was just related to the size.
