Seeing a picture of my fly (from a swap)is kind of a catch 22. I get to have a record of the fly, but I can see in detail the faults in my tying.
Anyhow, this is basically the type of Soft Hackle/Flymph that I use on my home waters. The only item omitted from this fly that I usually incorporate in my ties is a tail.
I can switch to Muskrat, Hares Ear, colored synthetics, add a different color hackle, or change the ribbing to copper or gold and have an endless combination of flys.
I have a great appreciation for the tyers on this forum that take the time to photograph their work and share it with the rest of us. I offer this humble little pattern to this board.
I am very fortunate where I live. The fish can be big, but they sure can be dumb too. How else can I catch them on such a basic fly?

Awesome fly. Thanks for sharing. I plan to tye some of these and try them on the streams here in New York. I am confident that they will catch fish. I just finished reading one of Sylvester Nemes' books of the weekend, and found that he loved to use dun colored hackle on many of his patterns.

Jeeze, if i saw one rise.....i saw at least a couple hundred this eve. The couple who threw the party for all Sowbug Committee members, volunteers and their significant others.....live right on an incredable property over-looking a great run on the White. All the turbins were off and the river was down; the weather was perfect and the fish were commin' up like popcorn.There were three souls out there fishin' for Trout and we saw quite a few hooked, played and landed. There were three different species of Caddis in the air and bushes.....a little black one, one a bit bigger with a light tanish/greyish mottled wing, and a brown winged one even bigger. Almost all the rises were the splashy kind when you know they're after Caddis. Big fun to watch while bout 60 people were eating and hangin' out. The food was to die for. At the end we all got Sowbug 2011 T-Shirts. Great party.

Why the dry fly hook? When I was 18 (30 years ago) years old, married, and a child in the house there were only a few hooks. The dry, the 9671, 9672, and the 79580. My patterns were built on the 94840 out of personal economics. That and I was too dumb/ignorant to know any better.
Now the rest of the story. Most of my flymphs and Soft hackles are tyed on the 3906 and 3906B. The Dry fly package was closest to me when I started tying for this swap!
I abandoned the dry fly hooks for the heavier hooks about 10 years ago. I cant say my catch rate is any better, but my confidence level in the stouter hook is higher.
That being said. I do prefer a fine wire hook if I know that I am going to fish a wet in the film. Grease the leader from one inch to a foot from the fly, and let er suspend.

Simple are the best patterns. Quick to tie so you're not scared to lose them and the fish love them. It's the execution of the simple patterns that makes one tyer stand out from another. I also tie a quite a number of my soft hackles on dry and emerger hooks. It allows the fly to ride higher and freer in the current depending on how you fish them.
