Sweet fly Carl. That head is cherry! Great pattern conversion.
Is the tinsel mylar or metal? If it is metal, I would be interested in knowing were you got it. I have not been able to find metal copper tinsel at the local fly shop (just carries the blue/copper mylar stuff).

Ray, Don't know what size Carl used, but Flat Tinsel in copper is available from John in sizes Med and Large. Here's a link to the medium.

Jim also has some copper, Oval I think, in small.

Thanks.
I have some metal tinsel from some older stock I got from someone. My best guess on size here would be the large. It was a little larger than I wanted, but all I had, except for the mylar you describe. I tried some copper flashabou as well, but it was so thin I had a hard time getting the coverage I wanted.
Thanks for the links Ron. Going to have to pick up some of the copper braid. Might do it personally...I have 10 days in Yellowstone, in about 3 weeks....if I can find some water low enough.

A superb dressing Carl, I have shown this fly on my site, but yours is much much better.
I think your variations in the recipe are improvements.
Here is mine for comparison.

This is a quote from Roger Fogg -
Generally regarded as a grayling fly, it may be leaded so that it will fish deep
in pools where winter grayling hug the bottom in shoals.

Thanks for the kind words. I saw that comment by Roger Fogg on your site Donald. I have never fished for grayling, but I am going to give it a go on vacation for the first time. The pattern has worked very well the last couple weeks on the lakes around here for rainbow trout. My son actually found the pattern within my books and chose it to tie one rainy afternoon. I joined him.
We finally got a couple days of spring-like weather so I had to get outside and shoot a few photos between mowing the yard and pulling weeds. Snow pack is close to 300% in some of the drainages around here. I'm usually taking hikes into the mountains by now and doing a little fishing. There is still eight feet of snow in many places. It's going to be the end of July before the rivers come down enough. Bad for the fisherperson, good for the fish as the water will be cool long into summer.
