Iron Dun Llama Flymph

Post by tie2fish » Sat Jun 25, 2011 7:37 am

Llama as "spiky" dubbing ...

Hook: One somebody gave to me; a Gamakatsu I think
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer, scarlet
Hackle: Starling
Tail: Starling hackle fibers
Underbody: Liberally waxed thread
Body: Iron dun llama fur cut into small pieces and inserted into on-hook dubbing loop, spun tight prior to wrapping forward
Head: Thread

This photo is lost.

Like this one a lot.... :) I'm curious how you're chopping up your llama fibers--scissors or pulling apart with your fingers to "randomize" the fiber length?

CB ~ The llama fur fibers are too long to get the effect I wanted, so I pulled out and discarded the relatively large, really long fibers and then cut up the rest with my tying scissors.

Excellent, thanks for elaborating--a killer pattern in the film, no doubt. :)

Very nice fly Bill. From what part of the starling you picked the hackle?

Ruard ~ That starling hackle feather came from the side of the breast, more or less where the leading edge of the folded wing at rest would be.

I REALLY like that fly! Sometimes I look at a pattern and in a second I know it will be a fish producer. Your Iron Dun Llama Flymph is one of those!

Simply superb! Was this made with your special tying wax? I love the color of the silk underbody.

I'm using my wax exclusively now. It's not dark enough to do a whole lot as far as coloring silks is concerned, but it does provide a nice tint. Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
