PMD Flymph

Don't remember if I posted this one before. The older I get the more that happens. Anyway, this has been a real producer for me when PMD's are about, even before or after a hatch has come off.
I used to tie it with just a gray dun hackle, but after reading a Syl Nemes book again, I noticed he liked a honey dun hackle with an almost white list. Believe it or not, that small change made a difference for the better in how the fly performed. It was good with the dun, but it's dynamite with the honey dun.
Hook: Mustad 94842 #14
Thread: Gray
Hackle: Honey Dun with light list
Thorax: Dark gray Ostrich Herl
Rib: Fine Copper Wire
Tail: Three or four fibers of Yellow Wood Duck Flank (Yes, Jim Slattery, trout can count. LOL)
Abdomen: PMD colored dubbing

Ron, you could post everything older than 6 months again, and I would probably not know the difference. My memory is crippling lately. So let me say for the first time, probably the same thing I said last time you posted this one

, I like the full thorax ties a lot. I need to tie more of those, because I kind of prefer them, but I keep picking up game hackles. It's amazing that the hackle color made such a noticable difference. I'd like to hear more about that. I put so much emphasis on flubbing the presentation, I have a hard time discerning the finer points. Great pattern.

Excellent blending of subtle colors, REE, and a great profile on a sweet hook. I do believe I'll try that in a small size for our late season "sulphurs", which tend to be of a lighter shade of pale.

That reminds me, Jim was supposed to find me a honey dun hen...
Beautiful fly, Ron. I remember reading about Mr. Nemes preference for the honey dun hen. Nice to know you've corroborated his success.

Ray,
This is the neck I've been using, a Hebert Minor from Jim, along with the Ostrich Herl. I must admit that I gave Jim a bit of business on the Honey Dun at the Idaho Falls show. Now I need a couple more.

Lively looking PMD Ron. A fly that I say looks "perky". I can see that doing very well.

A very nice fly Ron, those up eyed hooks, I know they were used on some of the old
Leisenring flies, to me I think of dry flies when I see them.

I like the up eye hooks. The 94842 is a dry fly hook but works well especially for spider patterns. I've got some old mustad up eyed hooks with a limerick bend that definitely are not dry fly hooks. Quite stout hooks.

Halford and the dry fly fanatics were among the first in the UK, to adopt
eyed hooks and they generally used up eyed, the wet fly anglers were much later and generally used down eyed hooks. So! Up-eyed was regarded as dry fly and down-eye was
wet-fly. This is only true in the UK although the Captain Hamilton Dry fly hook was down-eye, the difference with their wet fly hook was lighter gauge for dry and a medium gauge for wet. But mostly it was 'up' for dry and 'down' for wet, this was until relatively recently.
