Coq-au-vin

Post by DNicolson » Sat Jul 09, 2011 9:55 am

Here is one I mislaid, then posted elsewhere. I did not like the picture
I used. So this is a new one, also I have corrected my French :) .

Image

Coq-au-vin
Hook: #12 TMC 206BL
Silk: Pearsall Claret
Body: Wine (claret) small wire
Thorax: Claret seal's fur
Hackle: Coq-de-Leon speckled hen

If I had a claret fur other than seal, I would have used it.
A less hairy thorax would have been better, in my eyes.

Magnifique!

Wonderful fly, Donald. I love the color combination. The ribbing adds a great segmentation to the body.

DONALD - THAT IS A TRULY BEAUTIFUL DRESSING; THE HACKLE IS ESPECIALLY WELL DONE, AND THE BODY WORK IS PRECISE WELL BEYOND MY ABILITIES. ALSO, I'LL VOUCH FOR RUARD'S CLARET DUBBING, WHICH IS NOT ONLY EASY TO WORK WITH, BUT A MARVELOUSLY RICH SHADE AS WELL .

This pattern was inspired when I saw Wine coloured wire listed on a suppliers
web-site. I had a sudden inspiration to combine the colour Wine or Claret with the
Coq-de-Leon hen and the name for the fly seemed obvious. It is also one of my
favourite meals. It is a very nice hook, which I have been using for a good few years now.

I shall dress another with Ruard's dubbing and use a shorter fibred hen hackle and
everyone will no doubt give plenty of opinions.

Donald, you were right, this is a great combo. I'm partial to that body technique and the whole thing fits this hooks nicely. Great name too. Obvious or not, it's great when things come together like that.

After seeing Donald's wonderful wee flee I promptly fired off an order to my local stockist for several colors of wire, looking to play around with Donald's technique. Got my confirmation e-mail today, guess what color is back ordered? If you said wine (in this case it could be whine) your right.
