Im-pecc-able. (My apologies, but that's an outstanding tie.) :) Do you have to flatten the bristles any before wrapping, or do they naturally snug-in tightly as pictured?

Great pun, CB :lol: . No flattening required on the bristles. I think they're pretty much round when you clip them off the patch, and then deform (flatten) just slightly from tension when wrapped. All I did with the one on this fly was to pull it once across my wax before tying it in. I'll bet you could do some really nice things with them using dye or colored ink.

t2f, Howdy;

Bill, don't think any coloring would be necessary for the one pictured.

To reinteriate willowhead's question ... do you soak them first or can they be done, as you have, dry?

Hank, Howdy:

I can't speak for all peccary bristles -- some may be older and/or more dried out than the patch I bought -- but they seem to be strong and flexible enough to work with without soaking. They are actually modified hairs and not feather stems like peacock herl or quills, so perhaps they don't get brittle as easily.

Thanks for elaborating: both this fly and Carl's "Devil's Crooks" show how the right wax can really "elevate" the execution of a fly. The abdomen near the hook barb and that little tag of silk really make the whole thing, IIMHO. :)

Stunning in its simplicity. An absolutely perfect tie. A new fly I presume?

Bill, I always have a kind of "aha" moment when I see peccary done so well. It just looks so nice and makes for a compelling body. Nice fly.
