Here is a couple flies I call Trout Sticks. They are tagged flies. There is a classic PNW pattern call a Steelhead Stick whick is a simple black body, black hackle, chartreuse tagged soft hackle. These are just smaller variations on that.

This is my yellowtail version



...and my GB skunk version ( I used to tie this with black hen, but I have a bunch of the partridge dyed iron blue dun from the Nemes patterns I tied and I really like it instead of the black)

Wow, I love the yellow-tail version: I've been wracking my brain trying to think of the softhackle version of a Mr. Rapidan (in truth the only fly you need to fish, February through April, in these parts) and I think you've found it.

Just to clarify, though: hare's ear mix, oval rib, antron yarn tag?

You've got it, the tail is a material that I just love, Gem's Wool dyed a sunburst yellow, but I'm sure any bright yellow wool or antron yarn would be fine. The Gem's wool is fairly fine, a little softer and finer than antron.

Carl - remarkable flies and photos. It's hard to believe you could raise the bar any higher, but once again you have done just that...

Too, too kind. The yellowtail hasn't seen too much water yet but the GB Skunk is a real fish finder. Also, I tie these pretty small. Usually #14's and smaller, these are on #15's.

You could make a living as a photographer.

I like em. These are the type of flies you can stick on when you're trying to salvage a bad day of fishing. For some reason these types always work. The trout must have good taste.
