A favorite fish catcher still today ...
Hook: 18-14 (Daiichi 1640, #14)
Thread: Unwaxed purple silk (Pearsall's Gossamer #8)
Hackle: Upper covert from snipe wing (Fogg says "... the correct feather is dark grey, with a slight brownish tinge, and becomes a lighter fawn or cream at the tip".)
Body: Unwaxed purple tying silk

Between you and Ray I don't think I've seen neater bodies.

Oops I meant fly bodies.
You'll notice a distinct lack of these in my fly box.

Very nicely done Bill.

t2f, Howdy;
Really enjoy the neatness and the tiny head. the sparsness of the hackle is great as well.

I'd say this is textbook perfect, but I can honestly say that I have never seen one in print done this well. You've raised the bar again...

Nice one, Bill. It's tough to get the snipe to behave so well.

That's as nice as it gets Bill. Btw, what bug is it that's purple?

Mark,
This fly was the forerunner of the Iron Blue Dun. When wet it has a very dark appearance. In my opinion, this fly works best if there is no waxing of the thread so the water penetrates the silk. I'm sure you know the dressing for the IBD.
Bill, This fly is tied superbly, and I love the hook.
