Steel-head Flies coloured with pens

Three Seatrout/Steel-head Flies, with Brahma hen hackles
coloured in various shades with pens.
Hook: Partridge YK12ST #10.
Thread: Black.
Body: Silver Thread, Craft Shop.
Thorax: Squirrel Belly, Camel.
Hackle: Brahma, col. fiery brown
Hook: Partridge YK12ST #8.
Thread: Violet.
Rib: Amber Wire.
Body: Brown Camel Dubbing.
Thorax: Black, Camel.
Hackle: Brahma, col. Mulberry.
Hook: Partridge YK12ST #10.
Thread: Black.
Rib: Fluo Yellow Thread, doubled and twisted.
Body: Dark Olive Camel.
Thorax: Dark Olive Camel.
Hackle: Brahma, col. olive green.

I would say that you have done an excellent job of coloring these hackles, Donald, and the resulting flies should certainly attract fish. They are all beautiful, but I am especially drawn to the third one, with its nicely tapered, dubbed, and ribbed body merging into the color co-oridinated thorax and hackle collar.

Put me down as a fan of #3 as well--that would make a great early season fly in my part of the world. I'm loving the Partridge hooks as well...

Great ties, Donald. Those hackles turned out to show very well and make a nice composition with the body design. Cool series.

The hooks are called sedge (caddis) hooks and Partridge
have been making them for a good few years,
actually I am not sure that they still are,
but I know a supplier who still stocks them.
I have tied flies on them with tails, and they were ok,
but I think they look good on a tail-less fly.
I believe that the hook contributes to the appearance of the fly
as much as any other component.
Whether this influences the fish in any way is very difficult to judge.
So! I go by how it looks to me.

It is a very handsome hook indeed; Daiichi's #1260 is very similar, which I use for stimulators, stonefly nymphs, and some caddis patterns. Partridge hooks tend to be a little difficult to find in the USA for some reason -- at least in the shops I have ready access to.
