Rusty Berlin Bum
Hook - Mustad R50U / Size 12
Thread - 8/0 UNI-Thread (Black)
Hackle - Indian Hen Saddle Hackle (Dyed Rich Brown)
Abdomen - William Bailey's Berlin Wool Yarn (Rusty Orange)
Thorax - Peacock Sword Fibers (reinforced in a thread dubbing loop)

The abdomen is formed by splitting apart the yarn into the individual ply (strands). I tyed in two ply and then wrap them forward together. I get a smoother abdomen by splitting the yarn apart.

Ray, Howdy;

Nice tye. Looks like it should stand-up to a few fish before it gets that nice
"comfortable broken in look".

Hank - you comment ("comfortable broken in look") describes ME perfectly. :D

This is my first time working with the Berlin Wool, which I recently purchased from our own Bill Bailey. It is really beautiful yarn. It seems like it will be a durable material for fishing.

Bill - Your dye jobs are terrific. The different colors of the yarns are all very rich looking. Great stuff.

That's just great Ray. There's no way in my lifetime I'll ever be able to tie all these awesome flies let alone fish them!

On a larger iron that would be a fine Steelhead fly to swing!!!

On first seeing this pattern it reminded me of a Royal Coachman.

On that note, could this be called a Royal Coachmen soft hackle style?

How does Berlin Wool compare to other wool tying materials?

Really nice tie Ray.

Roadkill - The peacock swords will be tough to scale up. I'd probably switch to peacock herl for a larger version. I just liked the metallic blue of the sword fibers in the smaller flies.

Wayne - The Berlin wool is very similar to other wool yarns I've used. The diameter seems to be smaller, making it nice for fly bodies. The yarn is easily split into the individual strand/ply. The yarn has a total of four (4) ply. The rich colors are what make Bailey's Berlin wool special to me.

Regarding your comment about the Royal Coachman, I think this fly could easily be tweeked to capture the elements of the Royal style flies. I think I would like a some sort of tail (perhaps pheasant tippets, or white hen fibers). I'd use red yarn instead of the rust colored used above.

I find it interesting that some color schemes (like the "Royal" series) resonate over time...
