The hooks, tying thread, and type of hackle are all the same on the following; the differences among them are the amount of brown partridge hackle and the material used for the bodies.
Hooks: Daiichi 1640, #14, straight eye, 2X short
Tying thread: Pearsall's Gossamer #19, hot orange
Hackle: Brown partridge from back

That is some pretty nifty silk-work, especially toward the eye--what do you use to sever the thread? I finally dug up an old X-acto knife thinking I might need to up my game, but you might have a better plan.

The waxed version looks pretty sexy to my eye. The AJ silk floss version is a bit chunky for my liking, but I love the colour of that floss.

CB ~ I use a razor blade to cut off the tying thread.
skunkaroo ~ I know exactly what you mean and I've got a couple of ideas for how to slim it down ; the results may show up here ...

This was a little experiment I did a good few years ago, the Brahma hen had only
just been introduced over here. I am not sure whether the orange or hot orange was better.

Bill as far as body color goes I'd think it would just depend upon the color of the natural that one may be trying to suggest. I do have a question though rather than another comment with that being about hackle length. Realizing on a size #19 hook locating the correct length hackle for the fly can become a chore. Are these hackle a bit long for the hook or am I all wet on this? Well as long as I'm on a role here Bill I'm in the camp of sparse looks better and like the hackle job on #2.
