Rio Grande King Soft Hackle (conversion)
Hook - Mustad Model R50/Size 12
Thread - 8/0 UNI-Thread (Black)
Tail - Golden Pheasant Tippet Fibers (dyed red)
Body - Beaver Dubbing (Black)
Hackle - Indian Hen Saddle Hackle (dyed rich chocolate brown)

The inspiration came from one of Wayne's recent comments. I just had to try a soft hackle conversion of this pattern.

Question - Does anyone know who originated the Rio Grande pattern? I was familiar with the Rio Grande as a dry fly pattern. I normally think of this as a Trude style dry fly (wing of calf tail tyed low over the back).

Oooo, that gives me an idea. I think this could be tyed as a bubble-back pattern, by adding a clear antron over the back of the fly. Sounds interesting...

I know it's been raining Ray, but you have to get out of the house! :-)

The old and I mean OLD outdoor editor for the Rocky Mountain News claimed he only needed 3 patterns to catch fish in Colorado. A Rio Grande King Dry, a Rio Grande King Wet, and any other pattern as long as it was a Rio Grande King.

I was tending the house this weekend, while the missus was out and about. Made for some nice quiet time. Tying takes my mind off the world.
