What a brilliant example of altering quill bodies. This composition is fantastic. I found the same thing when I looked at the picks I took, that there is quite a variance in the diameter of each hair which gives this an exagerated segmentation. Its a cool effect. Please get out on some water and give a report.

It is probably a little large for what get called "midges" in North America, Ruard, but if it were tied on a #18 or #20 hook (or smaller) it could serve very well as a midge larva. I was thinking along the lines of a black fly emerger, and it's even big for that. Thanks for the compliment, and thank you also to the other respondents.

I tie one of my go to midges for Western lakes on a Mustad 9671 # 10 or 12. Some of our chironomids are 3/4 " long. ;)
