I debated about putting this one up. First, it's not the best quality image and second, it's only vaguely "Soft Hackle" ...but in the interest of mixing it up a bit...
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Hook: #10 Trout Legend TL400
Thread: UTC 70 Fluorescent Orange
Tail: Fl. Sunburst Fritz pulled from cord
Rear Body: Fl. Sunburst silver straggle fritz
Hackle: Fl. Orange Chinese Hackle
Front: Dyed olive brown partridge secondary
Not for the faint of heart, this is a "competition fly" designed for attraction only (in case you haven't guessed). It's designed for lake fishing and would normally be used on the top dropper of a three fly "pulling" cast, followed by other wets such as Zulus and the like. I should say that I nicked the pattern from a UK competition site and then modified it to suit the materials at hand and the way in which I'll use it.
It's an experimental fly only at this point, but it's definitely got the right stuff to work in competition.

Is it just me, or does anybody else notice that the more beer you drink, the more synthetic you use? I need to cut down on the synthetics, but I like my beer wayyyy too much!
Excellent pattern sir!

Aaron - I am glad you decided to post this pattern. I always love your creations, and this is no exception. It reminds me a lot of the Irish loch patterns (bumbles?).

Thanks everyone.
Just something a little different. It's actually going to be used on Rainbow and Brookies in Quebec at the end of October. I'm also going to be testing at a lake in the interior of BC this weekend where the Rainbows go nuts for orange flies. Keep in mind competition fishing is rarely about matching the hatch. Often a bright fly like this is used to attract fish to a more sedate/natural looking fly elsewhere on the leader. While the Brits normally go with three wets, typically we go attractor on top, small natural on second dropper and larger leech or small streamer on point. For instance I'm going to be pairing this with a drab #16 mayfly imitation on second dropper and a weighted crystal chenille leech on point, all on a very slow sinking line (assuming the fish are up in the water column).
It's modeled after the British dabbler patterns, but where these traditionally have a splayed wing of bronze mallard I wanted a bit of contrast between the over-the-top body and the front portion of the fly.
Oh, and yes the beer/synthetic ratio always comes into play
