Spring Black Variants

As part of the last IBF swap I tied up a set of Spring Black Variants. Similar to the flies in the longer discussions we had this summer regarding Black Gnats and the Spring Blacks tied or listed by many of the North Country folks as well as Leisenring. The progression in trying to decide what to tie for the swap went from full figured to rather slim. I really enjoyed using the magpie tail fibers. It would have been nice if the quality and iridecence of the hen and magpie had been captured, but this will have to suffice.

Hook: vintage upeye Mustad #7974 #15
Silk: Claret Pearsall's
Body: Claret Pearsall's with magpie tail fibers twisted with the silk brought back up the body.
Hackle: Black irridescent hen hackle.

Look good.

You can capture iridescence in a photo, but you need the right lighting, and it can be quite hard to set up;

The flies look a bit tatty because they had been used. I was just trying out some lighting setups and picked a couple with "metallic" feathers out of a box at random.
