Reports on the Whitefish this Fall was that they were hitting Two toned, Rubber legged Copper Johns. Well, I hate CJ's and I hate Rubber Legs! Sorry, hate is a word I dont think we use enough . Anyway, I got to thinking about the Wire Bodied flys that were being shown here on the Flymph Forum earlier this year, and decided to try some for myself. I had all the material layed out for Dougsdons Beastie (My variation) so thats what I tyed. A variation of the Beastie and Two Toned Wire. Being that I had an assortment of hooks already laying out, thats what I used.

Hook - Mustads 9671, 3906B, and 3906 sizes 14 & 16
Thread - UTC 70 Brown
Tail - Dark Brown Rooster Hackle (Strung Woolly Bugger Hackle)
Abdomen - Gold UTC wire (Small)
Rib - Red UTC wire (small)
Thorax - Sowscud dubbing mixed with Olive Rabbit under fur (not teased out)
Collar - Dark Furnace Hen Hackle wrapped three times.



This fly took half the White Fish that I caught today, and that was quite a few fish. Thing is, it only caught the smaller fish. The big fish of the day took, Dougsdons Beastie (bead slid ahead on the tippet), letumgos POP, and a Cased Caddis(bead slid ahead on the tippet).

If I showed you my variation of the Two Toned Rubber Legged Copper Johns, you would know why I use the word "hate". They look pathetic!

i love your flies Bro., and having seen them, live, up-close and personal.....it's totally understandable as to why they work so well.............you put a lotta love into your tyin', and it's embedded in the flies..........it's like, a dang fish is swimmin' along, he he says to hisself..........."Self".........why the hell not, i need some exercise, and any dude tye this cool, should be appreciated. Popsycle stick would be an upgrade. I went total redneck with my setup. I started with a stir stick from the paint store.....



Then cut it down to about the size of a popsycle stick and glued it to the bottom of a wet cat food container......


The stir stick is alot softer wood than a posycle stick and easyer to stick my flys into.

I dont have a tripod, so I saved a few more of those cat food containers. I stack them to the height of the fly I am photographing. I can get fairly close with anywhere from 3 to 5 conatiners. To fine tune it I use a shim....


I decided awhile back that I was getting better light with sunlight, so I set up my studio at the west end of my garage. In the evening I open the garage door, and have the sunlight at my back, shining directly on my studio. Then I take my pic. It's dark now or I would show you this sophisticated set up.

You think the stir stick is redneck? Wait till you see my studio!

The garage door is on the West side. Thats why I catch the Sunset. Gosh Hank, does the sun set in a different direction down their in Nem Mexico? Oh, saw some Sandhill Cranes fly over this week...Made me think of you.

Wire on wire?!?! Very cool! I really like the contrast and that olive colouration? Very tasty! I can see why it worked so well for you.
