Two-Tone HE Furnace

Post by Old Hat » Wed Dec 21, 2011 5:16 pm

It feels good to be back at the vice as of late. With kids in football and soccer, coaching soccer, hunting deer, elk and birds I haven't been at the vice in a while. Here is a fly style that I like that uses two thread colors. I use this style a lot on my smaller flies, #16-#18 and keep them simple.

Hook: #16-#18 (this one is on a #16)
Thread: black and orange Pearsall's silk, well waxed
Body: orange thread to the rear 1/3, black in the front 2/3
Thorax: hare mix
Hackle: well marked furnace hen

Hi Hank,

I start with the rear color (orange) tie it back then forward and tie off. Then tie in the forward color (black) and work the rest of the fly with that. You have to keep it as simple as possible with the small ones.

Old Hat,
As a co-worker used to say, "that's kinda sexy". He was a peach of a guy and he meant that comment with the utmost honor and respect and I do to. I am likin' that two toned body crowned with the hares mix thorax. Yum! Are there other combo's in the works? Glad to see you back in the saddle!

Hi Dougsden,

I have used other color combinations. Yellow/Brown, Green/Brown, Red/Black with grizzly hackle for midges in #18-#22 but then I switch to Griffith's 14/0 thread for that small.

No problem Hank, there are a number of ways you could tie it. I don't worry about the transition point too much so just wrapping over the rear color works just fine and keeps it simple.

Mark - How did you make out today? Did you get the result back from the doctor?
