A few days ago while I was sifting through some saddles looking for quills to strip, I found a couple of really beautiful black feathers with a wonderful starling-like irridescent sheen to them. I didn't have anything specific to tie with them at the time, but when I saw the "Puke" fly that Mataura Mayfly posted, I knew immediately that I had to enact the proverbial " ... most sincere form of flattery". The hook is a Daiichi 1760 Size 14, the red thread is Uni 8/0, the abdomen is small red wire, and the thorax is peacock herl. The hackle is unfortunately not the coveted N.Z. railbird, but has some of the same qualities.

Handsome fly, Bill. I love the hackle on this one. Nice and full. Beautifully balanced proportions.

Looks like a killer pattern Bill.

The hackle is beautiful, I'm sure it would look even better in real life under sun light. You're photo is great but I've never seen the subtle iridescence of a feather captured by a camera.
