This can be tied in a lot of color combinations. I am particularly fond of this variation. One detail that I emply is to select pheasant tail fibers in which the dark spot as seen on the feather will lie in the thorax area when wrapping. This normally means that it is near the rachis of the feather. The color of pheasant that I like is called Antique Gold and can be ordered from Jim Teeny of Teeny Nymph fame.
Hook: Mustad 94842 #18
Thread: Griffith's 14/0 ginger
Tail: 3 pheasant tail fiber tips dyed gold
Body: pheasant tail fibers dyed gold
Hackle: bleached starling

I know that if I were to watch you tye something like that
you'd make it look so Danged easy, plus, you'd be chatting

Carl - Once again you have elevated a "simple" fly into an art form. It is these sorts of subtle details, that give your flies such class. Simply superb.

Thanks Hank,
I would not enjoy much more than tying and talking to you or anyone on this site for that matter.

Shows the beauty of a fly that a thinker has tied, versus a mass produced sweat shop fly.
Very very nice tie, fantastic attention to detail makes a "simple" two material fly look a million dollars.

What you do with "fishing flies" always amazes me, Carl. Only a true artist would put this much thought into deciding which specific fibers to select and exactly where to to tie them in so that the color pattern ended up in a certain place on the hook shank. Thank you for adding another dimension to my learning curve.

And we have a winner...if it were on a #12, it would be perfect.

A question: am I right that you're not twisting the fibers much as you wrap up the shank?

Carl,
All these flies are stunning as usual! I might have to tie this PTSH with some of my Teeny tails. Do you also tie a ribbed version of this for a little weight?
Why don't you post a finished donation fly selection photo to let the readers see one of the treats someone is in store for at the Expo silent auctions!
