just got the gaelic supreme wide gape midge hooks and really like them. is anyone else using them? they are labeled as dry fly hooks but i use them for soft hackled flies. here are some recent ties. not the best but i was in a hurry. otto

I have some in a couple of sizes - picked up many moons ago from the Belvoirdale owner when I spent a week fishing with him. I am mentioning this as we had a number of conversations on their origin and characteristics. They are British made hooks, hand made by a long standing hook maker firm called Sprite.

The hook design is by Jack Mickievicz, who insisted on a 10 degrees up eye (let's call it a ring eye ) and stout wire (a good thing in very small size hooks). Small barb, very sharp point and a wide gape. Nickel finish. Some of the finest midge hooks around. You will be pleased with them.

Otto, it's hard for me to approximate what size of hook that is. How stout is stout. It looks like a perfect little spider hook to me. Nice ties too. Simple and sweet.

Otto can answer on the size he used. I have the hooks in #20-24.

both those flies are tied on a #20 midge hook. they are very effective on the tailwaters that i fish. i didn't know they came in a #24, which would be interesting to use. they are stout but in my opinion not over stout, just right for me and i like the upturned eye as well. let me know if you have any more questions. otto
