Hackle - Indian Hen Back - Crawfish Orange (Hareline Dubbin)
Love the color of the hackle.

I like the color of the hackle aswell, but hen in Brown is my go to hackle...I can catch fish with that pattern CC..Very well done.

Interesting effect, and nicely tied.

That's a world class tye......from the hook choice to the varnish or whatever it is on the head. PURE CLASS...... btw, what wax are you using?

The wax is Rockworm's Dark Dubbing Wax. Think he offers light, dark, tacky, and whipping grades. He's a regular on FTF. I picture his operation as kind of a mad scientist thing.
Just used Loons Clear Hard Head on the heads. I happen to like the look of a glossy head.

What is "whipping grade wax"? I've never heard that term before. Is it meant specifically for whip finishing? Interesting...

i use to use Loon's Hard Head for a while.........but it seemed to thickin' way to quickly and always need thinning.........plus i really prefere to use a water based product if the fly has any chance of being lost to the enviorment.

Yes, exactly. Think that's Rockworm's own name for it. It's a light wax that won't discolor the thread and won't squeeze out between the wraps. I have a tube, but really haven't given it too much of a trail.

WH; agree about the thickening. Kind of a bother. I also use the old standby - SH. Like I said, I like the look of a glossy head. On most flies I tie for fishing, I trust the whip finish and don't use anything.

That might be a good question to put to the group - What head finish do you use, if any?

I use a few different kinds of Sally Hansen's clear nail polish (Hard As Nails / Super Shine / Instant Dry). I have been using Superglue quite a bit recently. It is nice and thin and gives a great shine to the head. For fishing flies, I often use a double whip finish plus a drop of clear nail polish. Kind of a "belts and suspenders" approach. I have never had a fly blow apart on me with a plain double whip finish. The head cement is purely for cosmetics. The fly just looks better to my eye with a wee drop of cement.
