Two Tone Flymphs

Post by DUBBN » Wed Feb 01, 2012 6:12 pm

JohnP and I have been corresponding about Dougsdons Flymphs. The Blue and also the Tan flymphs. During the discussions a Two Tone was brought up. For years I have been using Two Tone RS2 emergers. Gray and Olive being my favorite, and Gray and Mahogany being a close 2nd. So, I am going to try the same with my
Soft Hackle/Flymphs
My first attempt at a Two Tone Flymph was a Dark Olive abdomen, Muskrat thorax, and a Gambels quail collar. I dont know what it was about that first fly but I really did not care for it, so I tryed something else.

Hook - Mustad 9671 size 14
Thread UTC 70 Brown
Abdomen - Muskrat
Thorax - Chocolate Rabbit Fur (Too early for Easter?)
Collar - 3 wraps of Med. Brown Hen Hackle (A little heavy, but thats my preferance)

I think I made the Abdomen a tad too long, and the Thorax a little short. Also, I can do a much better job transitioning from the Abdomen to the Thorax. Dont get me wrong, I think it's a fine fly, but with the talent of the tyers on this board I know theres room for improvement. I am also going to get rid of the Cream background. My lighting is not working that well with it.

I am going to mess around with a few color combinations. Mainly for fishing, but I will also try to make them pleasing to your eye. I will post pics of the patterns if I think they are worthy.

I hope JohnP will continue to post pics of the flys in his series. I have seen one of them, and I am extemely impressed.

First off, thank you for another pattern that WILL be in my spring fly box. Wayne, your flies always inspire me to head to my vice. I love the two tone idea, but the thing that really catches my eye is the proportions you've used. Spot on perfect, IMO. I love the choice of hook. Long enough to develop a beautifully tapered body. I'm with you on the amount of hackle. Again, just right to my eyes. Beautiful work, my friend.

Great tie!

I have actually done quite well with two tone flymphs. This pattern (I may have posted this before, older pic) imitates a summer Caddis that hatches mid day around my neck of the woods. It has been extremely productive and matches the natural almost perfectly. Two tone colors should be used often imo. When insects hatch, they can be two tones. One color within the shuck and another color out of the shuck. Flymphs can be great for this.

Of course one could go crazy trying to match everything. I think finding good general two tone colors, like the one you posted are the ticket. The pattern I posted only works on one river ;)

Dubbn and RnF,
This is a very cool topic. Would you be willing to say how you constructed the two-tone bodies? I know how I'd do it, but there's a good chance you have tried different methods and have found one that you prefer. How do you prepare the dubbing fur? How do you get it on the hook? There's more than one way to do this, which makes it interesting to know the preferences of individual tiers.

Dubbn, About your lighting-- it may not be the cream background. Check to see if your camera has Auto White Balance (AWB). Looks like the photo is coming out too orange from tungsten illumination. AWB fixes that.

Both flies look great to me. Dubbn, I can see you took some care to get that gorgeous taper to the body. Not the easiest thing to do. I'm still working on that one.
RnF, that little beauty reminds me of the coloration of tiny burrowing wasps or bees that I see around here. Were you thinking of a terrestrial? a mayfly?

Very nice tie and a good topic.
GH Lawrie in his book The Rough Stream Nymph used a two colours in his flies but he achieved this by laying an alternative colour along the top of his fly. I posted a replica of this a few weeks ago but happy to do it again if it helps.

I shall have to log in a bit earlier in the morning Phillip, you beat me to it.
Lawrie did indeed dress two-tone nymphs, i.e. horzontally two-tone. I have dressed versions of his nymphs, but I can't find any pix. I have recently thought of using marker pens. I think I posted some here last year.
I shall have to see if I can find them.
