I posted a few days ago about my bucket list. I stated that I was turning 50 next month and one of the items on my bucket list was to tie a fly with Seal. A member and friend from this forum sent me some. I dont want to say his name as he may want to stay anonymous. I will give his initials, t2f! Thank you Bill!

The Seal is alot courser than I expected. Not a bad thing and not a good thing. I have to admit I was stumped as to what to tie with it. I sat there at my desk without a clue. Then I decided on a plain Jane Grey Hackle. I tryed to apply the material in a noodle. Nope, that was a pain in the butt, so I decided on a waxed dubing loop.

My first Seal fly

Hook- Mustad 9671 size 14
Thread- Benicchi Olive
Body- Orange/ Yellow? Mustard? Seal in a waxed dubbing loop
Collar- Grey Hen Hackle



Simple Scud
Hook - Dai-Riki 135 size 12
Thread- Camel UNI 8/0
Body - Seal
Rib- Copper wire

I know the scud looks a bit ,,,, anemic, but that is the way I tye them.

Wayne, these are great. If seal has magic powers, these ought to do very well. I especially like the scud pattern. It's strange that I just logged on and saw these. I tied a couple olive seal patterns this afternoon. My first time using the material as well. It's something that required some fussing for me, and I ended up using a waxed dubbing loop as well. Great patterns. And...Bill's good like that.

Great fly, Wayne. I'm glad you got a chance to fulfill a bucket-list item. Seal is a great dubbing, but can be finicky to work with. You've done a great job. I had not thought of using it for scud patterns, but your second pattern has convinced me that it is a perfect choice. Very impressive pattern.

Great flies! I really like that scud.
Try mixing in a softer fur with the seal as a binder. Hares mask or rabbit fur will work as well as other types of fur. When mixed with a binder you can get volume yet not a lot of density, which is a good thing if you want a good profile and translucence.
