Looking at the Pearsall silk thread patterns lately made me want to order some silk thread, but I cant justify the purchase as I won't use it very often. Instead, I substituted Coats&Clark thread. I am trying it on the up eye hooks JohnP sent to me. I have used the C&C thread for many years on midge patterns, so I thought I would give it a shot on a larger pattern.

I am struggling a bit with these hooks, and obviously with the thread. I keep crowding the eye, thus bulking the thread up at the head when I whip finish, and making the hackle tilt. I see my problem, now I must make myself correct it.

I think I can effectively use this pattern as an attractor when the PMD's or Yellow Sallies are coming off.

Hook - Up eye size 14
Thread - Coats and Clark Lemon
Abdomen - C&C thread
Thorax - Light Brown Rabbit fur (Touch Dubbed)
Collar - Gray Hen Hackle

It's not silk, is it? It's cotton. I've used cotton embroidery thread for bodies, but not tying. Cotton thread is usually too large for this.

I like the way the body turned out. I knew it would , as I use this same thread and tecnique to tye Yong Special midges all the way down to size 26 (size 24 the past few years). It's the bulk on the head that did me in. I knew on my second wrap of the whip finish that I was in trouble. I am sure I could swap the C&C with Uni after I tye the abdomen or even the thorax and get a lot cleaner lines, but I had to push my meager limits.

Besides, even though I like fishing nymphs, I am sick of tying them and needed a break. This pattern was a needed distraction.

Wayne, the body and thorax on this are great. I've tied some spiders with buttonhole and tie it in using finer tying thread and wrap it as a material. You might get a little more mileage by spinning, or unspinning the thread to get a slimmer/fatter profile or just a different effect on the body and certainly flattening the thread will give a better (smaller - not to say something is better or worse in this game) head. I have a number of rod building wrap spools which are nylon, and I keep meaning to tie some spiders with them. I did use one for a rib on the Hen Cinn 1530. I don't know what this C & C thread is, but the nylon goes very transparent when wet.

You're right, there is a hatch to match every fly...when it doesn't work out the other way around.

William, I treated the thread like it cost me 100.00 dollars an inch. I started the fly at the point where the thorax and abdomen meet. I then built the body. When I was done there, I had bare hook from the abdomen to the eye. I then tyed my hackle to bare hook. This cut thread usage in half, thus making for a tad thinner (less bulky) profile.

Hank, I start my thread where I think the abdomen should meet the thorax. Instead of wrapping back to the bend of the hook and covering the tag end, I wrap towards the eye while holding on to the tag with my left hand. I wrap to the point where I want the thorax to start and stop. I then reverse my wraps and head back towards the bend of the hook, covering my initial wraps. I now have two layers of thread for the thorax. As I continue towards the bend, I am laying down a base of thread for the abdomen. After I reach the place I want to stop, near the bend, I have a built in handy dandy tapered body to build on. The abdomen has one layer of thread, and the thorax has two.

These short shanked, upeye hooks are kinda kicking my back side. I tryed tying a Muskrat on on of them. I was gonna name it the "Up Town Rat". No, I wont be posting pictures. It looks more like something out of a Upton Sinclair book.
