Embroidered Caddis Soft Hackle
Hook - Daiichi Model 1150 / Size 10
Abdomen Underbody - White Woolly Nylon (used to form a smoothly tapered underbody / UNI-Stretch would also work nicely)
Abdomen - Embroidery Yarn (thanks William)
Thread - Gudebrod 10/0 (Brown)
Hackle - Whiting Brahma Hen (dyed March Brown)
Thorax - Peacock Herl Fibers (reinforced in thread dubbing loop)

Black and Marigold Sharpie Markers used to add mottling to the back of the abdomen. Just lightly touch the tip of the marker, in alternating dots, along the back of the abdomen. It is a quick and easy way to add a little more detail/mottling to the pattern.

Materials are listed in the order they are tyed onto the hook.

Thanks L. This was an excuse to play around with some embroidery yarn that William Anderson kindly sent me last year. I was searching around on my tying table and rediscovered this material. William found this cool substitute for the hard to find Chadwicks 477 wool yarn. It is some sort of embroidery yarn. Perhaps he can give us the make/color.

Ray: Have you seen the Chadwick's substitute that CM_Stewart sells on his TenkaraBum website? I got some from him recently and really like the color, very similar to the photos I've seen of genuine Chadwicks.

Wayne - Thanks for the heads-up about the Chadwicks sub. I know Chris is a big fan of the Killer Bug pattern, so I am sure he has found an excellent substitute for the classic yarn. I had some of the real deal, but I have nearly used it up for my fishing flies.

Great imitative pattern. I'm glad to see such a nicely shaped body with lots of natural tones. Great fly.
I believe this is the same material I used to tie my less than traditional Killer Bug patterns, that I can attest to, are a life saver at times. The material alone is a wonderfully attractive product, based on the aggressive takes. (indulge me, I have a couple minutes alone while the kids are with my parents and Gab went to Yoga. )

I was fishing on the Gun Powder Falls in MD with Bill one day and I was watching a few browns in the top 12-18" of a very deep steeply banked pool when I put the Killer pattern right up in the falls entering the long deep pool. It's heavily weighted and I could watch the fly dropping 2-3', maybe more as it came closer to me when a rainbow that I didn't even see - maybe 14+" made a dive bomb take from the upper column spiraling down like a fighter jet to take the bug. The flash of his roll over was such a surprise I didn't realize what was going on until the rod bent as he headed for deeper water. That was a cool take. As much fun as you can have getting to see the event unfold right in front of you. I took a couple more on the same pattern in the next faster run, and satisfied that the fly was a killer, I continued on with the pattern parade, anxious to see what else would work.
