Wind is howling here, fishing/float trips have been canceled, and I am left to my own devices. Not a good scenario. I decided to tye my own version of a Purple Soft Hackle. My son and my fishing buddy both like purple in their patterns, but for me, it's a cursed color. Being cursed I consider it Foo Foo and only good for looking at.

I was browsing YouTube and I have always liked the guy in this video. This is his Purple SH, and I copyed it. I decided to give Purple another shot.
It's still Foo Foo

My version
Hook - Mustad 3906B size 16
Thread - Griffith 14/0 Sheer Grey
Tail - Mallard dyed Wood Duck
Rib - Fine Silver wire
Abdomen - Griffith 14/0 Sheer Grey
Thorax - 50% SLF Purple 50% Purple Rabbit Fur
Collar - Dark Brown Hen Hackle
I am going to tye a half dozen of these, and a dozen nymphs with the same dubbing. If the wind calms down I may take the new puppy to the Gunnison in the morning and try them out.

Wayne - First off, terrific photos! They may both be "Foo Foo", in your opinion, but I would fish them with confidence. I think the profile of each pattern is very well done. I am inspired by the ribbing job on the first pattern (spot on perfect in my opinion). I have not fished with purple flies before, but I have heard from a number of guys locally that swear by the color purple. (According to "them", purple leeches are supposed to be killer on steelhead and smallmouth bass).
Anyway, great post. Foo Foo, or not, these are great flies.

I was going through some of my bookmarked spots on my Favorites tab. I ended up clicking of Charlie Cravens web site. I picked his tutorial for using oversized feathers on SH's. I tyed a half dozen up using his technique.

I was pleased with my results on the collar, but I am disappointed in the head of my patterns. I am sure with a little more practice I can cut the size of the heads down by 50%.
Hook- Mustad 3906B, size 14
Thread- Griffith 14/0 Black
Tag - Mylar (Silver side)
Body- Purple Rabbit Fur
Collar- Mallard feathers, dyed Lemon Wood Duck

Hackles are looking ok, but dang the heads just are not turning out for me.
Partridge
Mallard (dyed Lemon WD)

Part of the problem is the head looks good to me while still in the vise. The photos are showing the flaws. I reall really hate to admit this but I am going to have to buy a magnifying lamp. Turned the big 50 last week, and I am instantly going to seed.
