Trying my hand at up eye hooks again

Hook- Up eye
Thread- Griffith 14/0 Gray
Rib- Midge Tubing with Black Wire Core
Abdomen - Muskrat teased out between ribbing wraps
Thorax- Muskrat
Collar- Grizzly Hen Hackle

I am still hooked on the Midge Tubing with the wire or Krystal Flash core. I hope to give this pattern a whirl soon. :)

DUBBIN, Howdy;

Really good lookin fly, likin' the 'hint-of-a-head'. Really had to look for it.
What kind of action are the tube with wire bodies giving you. Any better then
a fly tied the same way minus the tubing ??

This is the first fly that I used the tubing as a traditional ribbing. When used as the entire abdomen, or body, the results have been pretty darn good.

I took my first 4lb Bow of the year out of the Colorado with it a few months back. I would say that half my trips this technique has accounted for half of the big fish of the day, and well over half the fish caught. In fairness, I have been fishing these patterns alot so it is no wonder they are doing well for me.

Perhaps success builds confidence in a fly & that confidence leads to more fish caught. :D

Beautiful flies, Wayne. I can see why they are working so well for you.

DUBBIN, Howdy;

Thanks Bud, was thinkin' that I hadn't hear you mention anything about
if the tube/wire bodies were working for you or not. Appericate the intel.

My guess is that Wayne doesn't continue to do much of anything that hasn't worked for him in the past ;)

Nice looking flies and like the effect on the tube/wire bodies. Please can you tell me more about this.

Wayne, this is a great looking pattern. No doubt you'll do very well with it. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't out perform these others and that is saying a lot. I just like the body on this combined with that hackle. Of course, it all depends on which gets more water time. Great job. (that barb could be an issue, however).

Thank you Ashley. tie2fish posted the idea awhile back of inserting krystalflash into MIDGE tubing, then using it for abdomens or even the entire body of different patterns. I tryed to locate his post, but I can not find it. Ray (letumgo) developed the idea of using xsmall wire. Both techniques have found a place in my arsenal.

Very simple. Cut a 3 to 5 inch piece of Midge Tubing, and twist a piece of Krystalflash into it. If you use clear tubing, the color of thread will dictate the color of the pattern. Use a darker flash or wire in the tubing and you are set to go. I use clear tubing most of the time but have been known to use Chartreuse or Olive. When I use either of those, I make sure to use a very light (color) thread as a base. Usually I use White thread.

The color combinations are endless.

Hope this helps sir,

Wayne
