During one of the evening tying sessions in Roscoe, Ray "Letumgo" Tucker was good enough to cut off lengths of wool yarn from his enormous collection of skiens to share with us. Going through this material the other day, I happened to chop up and process in a blender a color that I can best describe as "dull rose". The result was a shade that immediately called to mind what I think of when I hear the term "Tup's", and the following is what resulted from that:

Variation #3 on Tup's Indispensable Wet Fly

Hook: Vintage Herter's 423 TDE Size #14 that I found in a bin at the CFFC&M Gift Shop
Working thread: Sheer 14/0, pale yellow
Hackle: Honey dun hen
Abdomen: Gudebrod Size D nylon rod winding thread (as sub for buttonhole twist)
Thorax: Dubbing brush made on Clark's block (thanks, Doug) using blender-processed wool yarn (thanks, Ray) with waxed #3 Primrose Gossamer silk thread (thanks, Pearsall)

Ah, that one will fish. As much as I love the dubbing blend, I'm most intrigued by the Gudebrod--I've been really scratching my head over options for fly bodies on the "lighter" end of the spectrum (especially since I'm convinced that all wet silk is the same color. )

Terrific fly, Bill. I love the profile and color scheme. This would have been a welcome addition for the little stream "W" and I fished at Roscoe. I can see this being very effective.

That is a great hook. It has a neat vintage look to the bend. There is a good chance the hooks are from Paul Jorgensen's desk. The museum was selling a number materials that used to belong to Paul.

It must have been something contageous in the air last week about wool dubbing. I spent some time last week with a coffee mill and my supply of Merino wool skeins to blend some colors & fill up a dubbing dispenser.


Here is a variation of a Hidy Golden Olive flymph for gingerdun made out of 4 shades of wool blended.

That is a beautiful fly, a credible variation on Tups. Love everything about it.

Now I wish I had been more careful in going through the tying materials bin at the gift shop. Nice find, you lucky dog. Great hook.

Thank you, Lance. And excellent job on the wool dubbing box, Roadkill; my plans are for something quite similar when I find the right containers. And your Golden Olive Flymph is terrific as well.

Bill, I did well last week with a couple patterns such as yours and Lance's. Yellow Sallys and PMD's were prevelant. My patterns were not made of wool, but the abdomen on the patterns I used were similar.
