Dun and Hare Dubbed Quill 1550

Post by William Anderson » Mon Jun 25, 2012 6:04 pm

I'll explain further later, but for the moment...I found an old box of soft hackles that predate my having a camera. Some are better than others but they all have something to offer, I hope. My memory is poor but I'm pretty sure I haven't posted any of the upcoming flies before. This one is a quill body in open wraps with hare touch dubbed between the turns. It's actually not bad I think.

Hook: Daiichi 1550 #16
Thread: Brown Uni 8/0 (the days before I discovered...or could tie without breaking 14/0)
Hackle: Dun hen
Body: Hen quill over wrapped with touch dubbing on a long tag and brought forward.
Thorax: Hare

You've given me a couple ideas to play with (hen quill bodies, open spiral wraps, alternating dubbed thread wraps). All terrific ideas, on their own, and combined they are inspirational...

Thanks for sharing with us William.

My kinda fly - B U G G Y ! Great looking pattern, very cool technique with the dubbing.
I've never done much with quill bodies on wets, but I'm going to have to give this a shot.

Thanks. It's definitely a technique to revisit. Tied one of these for an IBF swap back then. It must have been around the same time. I'm glad I found these.
