Rasevic, this is my first attempt at your technique. I was a little heavy with the Hares Ear, but all in all I am pleased with my pattern. It is no where near as elegant as yours, but I wanted to give your method a try.

Thank you for the inspiration sir,

Wayne

You'll have a hard time keeping the brookies off of that one.... :) And you're right: Rasevic's really is a superior looking flymph.

Wayne, when that big ole shaggy looking moose wets down you might just be suprised what considers it a tasty morsel. :D
Sure is a buggy looking critter to my eyes.

As I was photographing this pattern, I kept telling myself, "fish like ugly flys".

I am taking a half day off work tomorrow. I think I will swing that woolly nymph through some riffles. I kinda have a feeling it will tick off some Browns. ;-)

Really buggy! Please advise on test results.

Wayne that is a brilliant use of the palmer technique. Buggy a hell. Big thanks to cicvara for bringing this to the front and major kudos to you for shagging it up. This just makes me want to hit a mountain stream immediately.

I started out on the lower Gunnison with a 3 fly rig for nymphing.

I started fishing at 2:00 PM, and I knew I had to be off the river by 4:00. My night to cook dinner.
I fished upstream from my truck through 3 holes. I have to admit, the biggest fish were caught nymphing today. I caught one Bow that would easily go 20 inches, and a couple more bows that were in the 16 to 17 inch range. I also landed a couple Browns that were in the 16 inch range, but football fat!

The water temps are a bit warm. The bigger fish took a little time getting them in. I netted each one, removed the hook and released them in seconds. I wont stress them any more than that due to the warmer water.

I fished till about 3:15 with the nymphs. I used a size 16 PMD nymph, a size 18 PT nymph, and a size 18 Buckskin nymph. The fish took the PMD, and PT. Not one trout on the Buckskin.

I had made it about 400 yards upstream when I decided to turn around and fish back to the truck. I removed the nymph rig, cut my leader back to the 3X section, and tied on the Woolly SH. I tied another 12 inch section of 3X tippet onto the leader directly above the Woolly using a clinch knot. On that section I slid on a Gold bead, then tied on a size 14 Partridge and Olive. When I swing Soft Hackles I tie my flies on in this manner. I simply slide the bottom tippet up and away from my first fly and I can replace it without changing the bottom fly.

Where I caught quality with the nymph rig, I caught quantity swinging Soft Hackles. The biggest fish was 14 inches. The smallest was the size of my pinky. I caught a lot of them! All Browns.

After CreationBear and I agreed that my fly could have been tied much better I got to thinking. What will the fish really think of it? In my opinion they loved it. It caught 2 to 1 over the Partridge and Olive. I bet a dozen fish were landed on that ugly pattern, and probably another 6 fish got away. At the end of the day, it was still ugly, and still catching fish.

I am tickled the fish liked my pattern. Sometimes I forget, it’s them that I really want to impress.

I got off the river at 4:25. I managed to get dinner started before my wife got home from work. All in all, a pretty darn good day for me.
