Your friend is going to love these flies. What a nice set. These should cover a wide range of insects.

Can you tell us what hook these are tyed on? Very interesting shape.

Thinkin' that your friend will be hammerin' on
yor door for more. ;)

Very neat.

Clever to use well short shank hooks. Same body size as say a #16 fly but the 4X short shank #12 gives you a nice big wide gape.

Thank's guys!

@Ray
Hook is made by Hayabusa, model H.ISE 147, size 12 (4x short, forged). It's pretty old bag of Japanese hooks, so it's possible that info is outdated...

It is not fly fishing hook, though - hook itself doesn't know that. :)

I'll guess that Mike Connor mentioned something like this - he frequently use bait hook (Drennan Carbon Specimen(?) ; bait hook for coarse fishing) for tying flies.

Anyway, this kind of hooks are used in bait fishing (coarse fishing), hence weird shape of hook (this shape of hook works well with some kind of baits). In Europe, coarse fishing is very, very popular, so it's easy to stumble upon hooks like that. There are myriad of similar hook among eyed, bait hook models of many manufacturers! You just have to dig in to it and serach...

I love these. I can easily see falling off the tenkara ledge in a big way. I've been reading about rod selection and pricing the set up. These flies epitomize what I like about the approach. Nicely done.
