Redheaded PT.

Post by DUBBN » Sat Aug 25, 2012 9:48 am

I finished tying a couple dozen PT nymphs this morning. While I had the material out, I thought I would play with making a wire head on some of the patterns. I know, it's not new, but it is fun.

Hook- Mustad 3906B size 14
Thread - Uni 8/0
Tail/abdomen - Pheasant Tail
Rib/Head - Small Red Wire
Thorax - Peacock herl
Collar - Dark Furnace, Hen Hackle

Well executed! That is surely to be a killer pattern. I have great times on red and orange PT's. I also like to tie with fine wire. Your PT is proportioned very well.

I don't recall seeing that style previously, but I like it a lot. Thank you for the idea, which I shall copy shamelessly.

Both very cool ties with that bit of extra weight they will behave just that bit different in the water to a thread headed version.

Two basic iconic NZ tying books will tell beginner tiers the PT nymph is tied with just two materials, copper wire and 4-5 strands of pheasant tail, no thread called for and the copper wire is used as the thread. Many here still rely on that style in tying these, with many a variation in how much copper is wrapped and where, but all end up with the wire head.
