I will be using this pattern on a couple Tailwaters here in Colorado that have Mysis Shrimp flushed through the generators of a couple hydro electric dams. The trout in these waters can get very big.

The Candy Cane Midge is by no means a new pattern. The addition of the hen hackle is my hair brain idea.

I will try the fly out this Winter when the crowds subside from these rivers.



White egg yarn or White rabbit can be substituted for the ostrich as well.

Nice use of ostrich on that little hook. Have you tried wrapping the herl a little wider to show the Krystalflash better?

With the Ostrich I dont want to show off the Krystalflash. I like the subtle pink hue the pattern gives off when it gets wet. That being said, I dont think it makes a big difference to the fish. Fishing buddies of mine use a White thread body, and Red wire rib and do as well as I with the Candy Cane midge.
From September 1 till May 31 Colorado law dictates that Tractor Trailor rigs going over Eiesenhower tunnel on I-70 carry snow chains. I saw the reminder on the local news and I had an involuntary brain freeze!

Tis the season

Got to like that Ostrich herl version, would do well here in the lower reaches of most river systems early in the season as a "whitebait" imitation. I like idea of the bulk of the white with the subdued hues of the krystal flash under, should give the glow you speak of when wet with pale translucent covering. Nicely done.

That should work real well for you. I like ostrich to impart movement in a fly. Very short little tugs will mimic the shrimp really well here. Nice tie.

Wayne, these do look frosty. I don't recall seeing anything like this and it's sounds like a great pattern. These materials should come together nicely and you certainly did a beautiful job tying these.
